Ottawa Backyard Garden Restoration

We recently spent some time on a local property to clear out invasive plants from five garden beds. This yard has a lovely collection of fruit-producing plants—including grapevines, apple trees, and raspberries—which the clients use to make homemade jam every year.

However, invasive plants had taken over the garden beds, hiding the beauty of the yard and making it difficult to access. Here is how we helped restore and organize the space!

Clearing out 70 Bags of Invasive (whoa)

Our first step was a major cleanout. Invasive plants quickly crowd out native species and food-producing plants, hogging all the soil's nutrients and water. By the end of the cleanup, the team pulled nearly 70 bags of invasive plant coverage out of the five garden beds. Clearing this out instantly gave the yard breathing room.

Repurposing Stones Found On-Site

We don’t always bring in all-new materials. Sometimes what we need is already on-site!

As we worked, we collected existing rocks that had been buried around the yard over the years. We repurposed them to build clean, natural borders around each of the five garden beds. We also used them to lay down a rustic pathway leading from the deck, winding through the garden, and curving right around a mature apple tree.

Now, the homeowners have a clear, beautiful path to walk along when they go to check on their fruit.

Giving Existing Plants a Better Home

This particular garden had some plants that were still loved and wanted, but just struggling in the wrong spot.

During the cleanup, we carefully transplanted several existing perennials to better locations throughout the garden beds. This not only gives the plants the soil and light conditions they actually need to thrive, but it also places them in much better viewing spots for the clients to look at from their deck.

Snacks for Critters & Next Steps

We aren't the only ones who appreciate a healthy garden! While working on-site, the crew noticed a little gopher family who had built their home right behind the back deck. It’s always fun to see the local wildlife enjoying the space just as much as our clients do 🥹

Later this week, we are heading back to the property to finish up the job. We will be applying a clean layer of protective mulch to suppress weeds and lock in moisture. We are also going to plant a few more native plants that will thrive in this environment (did somebody say strawberries?🍓).

Does your Ottawa yard need a reset? Whether you are dealing with overgrown beds or want to add some natural stone pathways to your space, we would love to help. Book your spot today!
