Designing a Functional River Rock Creek for Ottawa Stormwater
Heavy rainstorms can quickly turn hard-packed soil or side yards into pooling water hazards. While typical drainage options like PVC pipes can get the job done, functional landscape design finds a way to turn excess water into a natural feature for your property! Our team recently wrapped up a custom river rock creek for an Ottawa home, and the result is gorgeous!
A Rainwater Solution
Instead of simply piping the water away and toward the street, our team engineered a dry river rock creek that intercepts the run-off and redistributes it where the landscape needs it most. Here’s how it works:
Underneath the stone, our crew dug channels and shaped the soil borders to naturally force the flow of water downstream without eroding surrounding dirt.
The creek picks up water from the rain drain, going safely past the yard and in between tree roots and a retaining wall.
The creek empties into a reservoir, allowing the collected water to slowly soak into the dry spots of the front garden beds.
Whether you’re looking for a sturdy frame for your favourite hammock, a defined outdoor dining area, or a shady spot to read outside, a well-built pergola makes the perfect addition to your garden space.
Form Meets Function
Dry creek beds are an awesome way to handle stubborn drainage issues. The final look naturally blends in with the surrounding landscape, and during heavy downpours it transforms into a water channel that keeps your foundation safe and soil hydrated.
